A “Sweetheart” of a Sequel

Published by bookishinsac at 12:05 am under Uncategorized, books, fiction Edit This

I just kept reading. I finished Heartsick (see the previous post) and launched right into Sweetheart, which I presumptuously referred to as the next in the series, when it could be, the second of, well, two. Here’s hoping author Chelsea Cain and I are on the same page.

SPOILER ALERT: If you plan to read the first book, but haven’t, read no further. Seriously.

The character development still trumps the tension in her work. Archie Sheridan (cop), Susan Ward (girl reporter) Henry (Archie’s partner), and Gretchen Lowell (sexy, blonde serial killer) all reprise their roles. Portland takes a back seat this time, but peripheral stuff from the first book takes on more importance in Sweetheart. If I had one teensy weensy concern, it might be that there were moments I worried Susan might be slipping into the stupid-female-who-does-the-obvious-thing-that-allows-the-bad-guy-to-get-the-upper-hand role. Please, no. But I tamped down my cynicism and allowed my love of Henry and Archie to run free. I am sad only that at least another year will go by before Ms. Cain will publish another novel–if that soon. And with my memory, I can only hope I have this blog to refer back to to remind me who she is by then…
